Most of the advice I pass along on any given day is to someone actively buying or selling - or to someone who will be doing so soon.
But, plenty of those reading aren't in either camp. Today, I'm talking to you - the one not buying or selling anytime soon.
If that describes you, and if you own your home, I would encourage you to identify and then start to work to address any lingering house issues now rather than waiting for years to pass by.
Some examples, at least partially inspired by recent heavy rains...
1. Gutters that leak.
2. Damp spots that show up on your unfinished basement wall.
3. The downspout drain pipe that backs up and overflows during a deluge.
4. The few stains on the kitchen ceiling below a bathroom.
5. The worn and torn weatherstripping at the basement door.
6. That musty basement smell.
All of these are examples of what will likely be small home improvement projects - but going ahead and addressing them might reveal a larger issue that you should get ahead of now instead of later.
Many of these you can identify and troubleshoot on your own. Some homeowners have a home inspector inspect their home to identify any issues that should be resolved.
Bottom line - don't wait until you are about to sell to start identifying, investigating and solving those lingering house issues.
