Do You Like It Or Do You Just Think You Should

Open floor plans. Grey walls. White cabinets.
You'll often read about how these are some of the things home buyers like the most these days.
But just because they are supposedly what most people like and want... that doesn't mean you need to like or want those things.
Open floor plans are great if you like noise and activities to be able to flow from room to room. They're not so great if you like a quiet room to retreat to, or if you hate that the kitchen mess is visible from the couch. Neither preference is wrong. But just because one is more popular right now doesn't mean you have to prefer it too.
Grey walls are calm, neutral, and safe for resale. They're also... to some... sort of cold and boring. Some people love the calmness. Other people miss having a wall with some warmth or personality.
White cabinets photograph beautifully and they are often seen as the "safe" resale choice. They also show every smudge, every blemish and every fingerprint. Some people don't mind that tradeoff at all. Some people would be much happier with wood tones or a color they actually like looking at every day.
None of this means the trendy stuff is bad. But don't force yourself to like or try to like those trends - identify what you like best and let's find a house that has those features!
For each feature commonly found in homes these days, and considered to be popular by the masses, ask yourself... do I like this, or do I just think I'm supposed to?
