Who Owns Harrisonburg?

Of the almost 15,000 pieces of real property in Harrisonburg --- who owns them?  Mostly people who live in Harrisonburg?  Or not?  Mostly people living in Virginia?  Or not?  Record your guesses, and read on....

Per the data I'm working with (Sept '09), I find the following to be true, as pictured in the graphic above:

• 81% of Harrisonburg properties are owned by people with a Harrisonburg home mailing address (city plus Rockingham County homes with "Harrisonburg" mailing addresses)
• 87% of Harrisonburg properties are owned by people with a home mailing address in Harrisonburg or Rockingham County
• 95% of Harrisonburg properties are owned by people with a home mailing address in the Commonwealth of Virginia

Behind Virginia, the highest number of Harrisonburg property owners reside in:

• Pennsylvania (98 properties = 0.66%)
• Maryland (93 properties = 0.63%)
• North Carolina (65 properties = 0.44%)

Finally, while Harrisonburg property owners stretch out across most of the country, not a single current resident of these states owns property in Harrisonburg:

• Idaho
• Michigan
• Mississippi
• Nevada
• New Mexico
• North Dakota
• Wisconsin
• Wyoming
