Some homes need more preparation than others before they would be ready to go on the market -- but there is always something that could be done.  Whether it is a bit of painting, or rearranging, or de-cluttering, or mulching, or repairing, there are almost always preparations that can be undertaken in order to best prepare your house for the market.

But... most home sellers don't have an infinite amount of time (or money) to make those preparations prior to listing their homes for sale... depending on quickly they hope to have their home on the market for sale.

As such...

If you want to move sometime in the next few months, but you're not in much of a hurry at all... you might prioritize the preparations of your home, going a bit further than some sellers to make sure everything is "just so" before photos are taken and your house hits the market.

If you want to have your house under contract as quickly as possible, preferably yesterday, then you might optimize timing, and get your house on the market sooner rather than later instead of continuing to make further updates to your home.
