Redistricting Harrisonburg & Rockingham County Public Schools
Continued growth in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County has brought on the construction of many new schools:

  • Smithland Elementary School (2008 - Harrisonburg)
  • Skyline Middle School (2008 - Harrisonburg)
  • Cub Run Elementary School (2008 - just east of Harrisonburg)
  • River Bend Elementary School (2009 - Elkton)
  • East Rockingham High School (2010 - Elkton)
Rockingham County Elementary Schools - 2008The map to the right shows the (proposed) new elementary school districts in Rockingham County.

The Rockingham County Public Schools and Harrisonburg City Public Schools web sites seem to be the best source of information for keeping up to date on the redistricting.

In Rockingham County, there are four public hearings planned:
  • January 22, 6:30 pm
    Montevideo Middle School

  • January 29, 6:30 pm
    Turner Ashby High School

  • January 31, 6:30 pm
    Broadway High School

  • February 12, 6:30 pm
    Pleasant Valley Elementary School
I am intrigued to see the process unfolds. Everything I've heard about school redistricting is that it can be controversial.

For those who do not know Scott and cannot hear his voice as you read his blog, that final sentence in this post is a fine example of Scott's ability to make a huge understatement with just a slight smile on his face - making you wonder if he understands what he just said. He does. I think.

Ha ha --- yes, I do understand what I said. I think. :)

Actually, seriously, I haven't yet heard too many of the controlversial views coming out yet. Certainly, as one example, there is the strange dynamic (just east of Harrisonburg) of some residents driving from their homes, past one elementary school (Peak View) to get to the one where their children attend (Cub Run). Though it seems like that was probably unavoidable.

So....where's the controversy?? I was looking forward to it! ;)

The first of four public hearings held by the Rockingham County School Board took place last evening. I was not in attendance, but per Jenny Jones at the Daily News Record, most of the discussion seemed to be centered around the high school redistricting. The controversy -- some students will have to travel quite a distance to get to East Rockingham High School (in Elkton), and they actually live closer to Spotswood High School.

Per the January 25, 2008 Daily News Record, there has been a minor tweak to the redistricting in Rockingham County:

Per WHSV, "A major change was made to the original proposal after the first public meeting, and a new addition has some parents speaking out. Originally, students at Mountain View Elementary were going to switch to John Wayland Elementary, but that's all changed." Read more here.
